Private First Class GREGORY R. BENTON. JR.
Vietnam 1969 - POW / MIA
This web page is dedicated to PFC Benton in hopes that someone will remember something and come forward with information about his disappearance. This is what we have been told regarding PFC Benton becoming a POW/MIA in Vietnam on 23 May, 1969.
PFC Benton arrived in country on March 8, 1969. He was an 0311 and assigned to 1st Battalion 9th Marines. His unit was sent to the Ashua Valley in support of Operation Apache Snow.
PFC Benton’s platoon was sent to back up another platoon that had been engaged in a fire fight. That platoon had 2 KIAs and 1 WIA. By the time that PFC Benton’s platoon arrived the fire fight had ended. A landing zone was cleared for a medivac helicopter to extract the causalities. The bird landed and departed without incident.
Both platoons returned to the built up area. Sometime after returning to their home base they realized PFC Benton was missing. They returned to the landing zone to see if they could locate PFC Benton; but their efforts met with negative results. The last time he was seen by U.S. Forces was on the 23rd of May, 1969.
If you have any information regarding this missing Marine, please contact his sole surviving relative and sister, Mary Benton, at the following web address:
We will never forget and we will never give up. We’ll continue to hope and pray that someone will remember something that will bring closure to the whereabouts of this Marine.
